Fishing

Nearly every region in Brazil provides great opportunities for sport fishing. The country offers all that the fisherman could wish for: mighty rivers surrounded by tropical forests, rapids, lakes, endless stretches of beaches, mangroves and rocky coastline, not to mention the vast sea. Specialists from around the world are unanimous in classifying Brazil as among the countries richest in fish, and therefore an ideal destination for sport fishing - whether you prefer fly fishing, bait casting, spinning or angling with different baits.

We have provided detailed information about the four dominant fishing basins: the Amazon Basin, the San Fransisco Basin, the Ocean Basin and the Prata River Basin. Hopefully this will help you decide where to go to best suit your interests, and indicate helpful tips about how to make your fishing trip a huge success.Check the links below for operators and advice sure to reduce your time spent searching the web. www.braziltourism.org/fishing.shtml

The Amazon Basin

  • Highest species diversity of fresh water fish on the planet
  • Over 1300 species registered to date
  • Number of species believed to surpass 3000
  • Contains the world's largest hydrographical basin, comprised of the Amazon River and tributaries
  • The Amazon River is both the world's longest river, and holds the greatest volume of water
  • The most biodiverse region on planet Earth. Two thirds of the planet's flora and fauna biodiversity are found in the Amazon region
  • Wide variety of rivers in the region provide endless options - choose from white water rivers, black water rivers, and clear water rivers.

White Water Rivers:

  • Generate in the Andean and pre-Andean region
  • Waters rich in mineral sediments, including gold, and nourishing salts
  • Prime examples of White Water rivers are the Solimões and Madeira rivers

Black Water Rivers:

  • The waters are black due to the high humic and fulvous acids absorbed by the river from the forest
  • Due to high levels of acidity, the number of fish are limited
  • Bonus: Mosquitos are rare near black water rivers
  • The Rio Negro is a prime example of black water rivers

Clear Water Rivers

  • Generate in the Brazilian Shield region on ancient eroded grounds
  • Waters are highly transparent
  • Tips: The Apapá is very common here. Move the bait across the surface of the water, as the Apapá prey near the surface. Beware, the Apapá can easily escape after biting the bait by jumping out of the water.
